Garment Materials

Shade cloth, weed matting, wire, repurposed old flannel that was going to be chucked out

Garment Inspiration

My inspiration was avocadoes as I eat them all the time at home. I wanted a fun summery outfit that looks like something you could wear to the Melbourne cup. I made a fascinator out of shade cloth that is a green colour just like avocadoes, with weed matting for highlights, using wire to help it keep its shape, shade cloth was also used for the skirt. I dyed the flannelette using avocado pips left over from those I have helped eat at home. This took 2 attempts as I realised I needed a mordant such as copper to make it work. It turned it a nice rusty pink colour which is super pretty. I also altered the flannel to give it puffy sleeves and a bow in the front as it was once a preloved farmer's shirt.
