My work takes primary inspiration from the textile artist Johanna Trornquist and her piece “Precious Trash”. She uniquely marries age old techniques such as weaving with unlikely waste materials to create intricate wearable items. Viewing her work urged me to re-imagine farmyard waste.
I reside on farm but have always been oblivious to how an outwardly sustainable way of working is in fact generating so much unusable, excess plastic. This competition has pushed me to assess my surroundings, and attempt to view materials in a creative, alternative manner. With this new lens, I now walk the paddocks searching out every piece of refuse and envision yet another extravagant garment!
I wanted my garment to directly contrast with the common attire of flanny’s and jeans that one conjures when thinking of a rural worker. What better juxtaposition than a ball gown.
My piece “Farmyard Fancy” aims to bring high-class to the homestead.
