Value-adding is a winner at Agfest
The Unique Taste Pavillion Best Stall Holder title has been awarded to Hellfire Bluff Distillery.
A family of potato farmers from Boomer Bay (near Dunalley) who came to Agfest to launch their signature vodka product took out the coverted prize.
Potato Farmer and now Distiller, Suzie Daly, said only about one percent of the world's vodka is made using potatoes.
"We decided to use our unsold potatoes into a value add of potato vodka," she said.
"Potato vodka is very smooth, our product is unique to Tasmania, everything we've used to get this product to market came from Tasmania."
"It has been two-and-a-half years in the making, we did a lot of research to learn how to do it because it is very hard to extract sugar from potatoes," she said.
"We wanted to make our launch at AGFEST because we think it is a real agricultural story, using an unwanted product and turning it into something else," she said. "We also wanted to gauge if we had the right product and so far everyone is loving it."
Hellfire Bluff Distillery can be found at S38-3 South Street in the Unique Taste shed.
