The Greyhound Adoption Program of Tasmania - located at the northern side of the Equine Expo - is inviting people to come and see their laid-back and placid dogs.

Susan Gittus works for the Program, and she describes greyhounds as a "fantastic breed for a pet."

"You'll find a greyhound to fit any home and any lifestyle. They're in fabulous condition, well handled, affectionate and loving."

The Program assesses, re-trains and re-homes retired racing greyhounds. Much care is given to placing dogs in the right homes, and with people getting dogs that suit their lifestyles and properties.

"We have dogs that live in townhouses. Dogs that live in units, dogs that live in acreages," says Susan

"We ask a lot of questions, so that we can say: 'these dogs will suit you'. We meet you, and let you meet the dog before you adopt."

Through adoption, the dogs are saved from an uncertain future. Before the Program was established in 2009 racing greyhounds didn't have anywhere to go after their career.
